Dear Friends:
Here it is. There is no easy way to say this. I have Stage 4 Small Cell Extensive Lung Cancer (large tumor in my lung—upper left lobe) that has spread to my liver, many bones, and my brain. I will get a port put in Monday July 6th, meet with oncologist Tuesday morning, and start treatment Tuesday afternoon July 7th.
I know. Quite a blow.
Here is what the oncologist has told me: I will be treated by intravenous chemotherapy and will go for four days. I’ll wait three weeks and then do the cycle again. I will do six cycles. After the six cycles, we will scan and examine the progress. It should take about 4-5 months. The chemo will be a combination of three drugs. All three day one, two on day two, one on day three, and day four is for medicine and fluids. Day one will take about four hours, day two about two hours, day three about two hours, and day four about an hour. The chemo center is in the same building as my oncologist, Dr. Harvinder Singh. Unfortunately, there isn’t time for additional opinions or research. I need to get started. I will gather more opinions and data throughout the process. This doctor is very up on clinical trials and said most happen for what I call “second at bat.” Basically, if chemo does not work, I can try a trial. I told him I would be willing to temporary move anywhere in the country.
I am sure you have lots of questions. Jennifer and I have thought of 12 since our initial conversation with the oncologist. I don’t have more answers right now.
I am also going to explore supplementing with some holistic health and healing. I need to set up some meetings and learn more about it.
Here is my ask of you (it’s the same thing I told my family):
When you see or talk to me, keep it positive, light, and funny. I will not take sympathy calls or any negative vibes.
For now, all the information is in. It can’t get worse. I am packed, geared, and ready to climb the mountain. I got quite a fight on my hands coming but I feel as if I am ready to fight and win. The only thing I can ask for is a chance and I have that!!
I’m also working on a fundraiser to support The Tate Cancer Center at UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center, the place where I’ll be receiving my treatments. Be on the lookout for more information shortly.
One last note: at this time, I’m going to focus my energy on fighting this battle and spending time with my family. I would love to talk, but prefer a post on this website instead of a phone, text, or email. Thank you for understanding.
Lots of love,
David
