My dear friend Ellen Rappoport has been given me updates and I wanted to reach out to you myself. Your positive attitude is inspiring and I know your loving family has been beside you every step of the way. My fond memories of your girls attending Bet Yeladim and all of the connections your family made at BY warms my heart knowing all the support you are receiving from those relationships and beyond.

Lu, I see you are trying to gain weight. When we were riding the bus on a field trip in the 5th grade, we got into a serious and detailed discussion about what was the greatest food on Earth. We came to the unanimous conclusion that Doritos were not only the best food in the world, but that we would both like nothing other than to have a lifetime supply of them. So, go get you some Doritos! For every family sized bag that you eat, I pledge to eat two.

Keep fighting Luby! You inspire me. My sister, Abby, reminded me of a funny story… When we were seniors in high school, my parents took me on a college visit, but left Abby home with Kristen (Bowen) Perry. Somehow they locked themselves out of the house and needed “break in” through a window. Kristen and Abby went to David to ask for his help… and lo and beyond, he climbed onto the room and broke in through a bedroom window! I remember hearing that story and wishing I was there to witness it– I definitely had FOMO on a historical moment 🙂 But I think the moral of the story is that when my sister and best friend were in trouble, they went to David for help ☺️ And he helped.

Dear David,
Since receiving that first letter informing us of your current health crisis I’ve been following all posts. Most importantly, I send you prayers and well wishes. I admire your positive attitude. Keep it light and encouraging I believe was the request. Well I would like to tell you a story to which I know you will be able to relate.
There was a man in the prime of his life, about your age, who had a wife and 2 children just about the same age as yours. Out of nowhere he received a diagnoses of leukemia. Upon diagnosis was given little hope for a future beyond six months. He was determined and was referred to the University of Md. Cancer Center.
From day one the doctors at U of M offered him hope. Like you, he was determined to beat it. He began climbing “Mt. Cancer” with unshakeable determination, always remaining positive. He was motivated by his great love for his family and by their unwavering support and love for him.
After three years of chemo, radiation, some ups and downs, and a few setbacks along the way, he victoriously reached the top of that mountain. He remained cancer free for 33 years post treatment and “lived happily ever after”.
That man was my husband, your client, and friend, Ron Sanford.
I hope that this little “Fairytale” has reinforced your determination and confidence that you too will have that happy ending. Myself and my family will continue to send prayers and good wishes to you as you continue your climb. We will celebrate with you when you reach the top of the mountain!
Sincerely,
Betty Sanford

David, get your strength, rest, enjoy the beautiful day…. August is always a time of reflection before the turning of the season and the work begins. Enjoy it.
As I read your story again, like many people on here, looking through the well wishes and love of everyone in your circle of life. I stopped myself today to ponder something; 10 years of coaching, 2 sports, 6 assistant coaching gigs..that is incredible commitment! As a parent who assistant-coaches-when-he-has-time, tries support and help wherever I may, the level of commitment and time you put in is amazing. That is the stuff that makes a community, that creates bonds that tie us all together, that creates a life. I know you get a lot out of it (as you note), but I’m sure your world is better because of your efforts. I’m not in your immediate circle, but thank you for doing all that you do.
Eat something good today, enjoy the sun, enjoy the moment, love completely.
