In sports, we are always looking for the next Michael Jordan in Basketball or the next Lionel Messi in soccer. At the end of the day, those people are difficult to find, but the desire to get to that level drives many athletes to incredible heights. In Columbia, when it comes to youth sports, many will strive to get to the Coach Luby ceiling. When David was diagnosed with his cancer, one of the first things he did was think about how to leave a legacy. This selfless attitude is one of the things that made David a great coach. The first thing we did was sponsor 10 great kids at Running Brook Elementary to start their journey. The second thing Coach Luby wanted to do was help inspire the next generation of coaches.
To that end, we are partnering with the Soccer Association of Columbia and their Mentor Program. This program was created to provide high school age players with the opportunity to give back to their community through volunteer coaching in the SAC Recreation Program. Through the guidance of club appointed Sponsors, selected applicants gain valuable personal and professional life experiences.
Participants have the opportunity to:
• Earn volunteer hours
• Build resumes/college applications
• Develop leadership, organization, and communication skills
• Gain experience working with children
• Build professional relationships within the community
• Pass their knowledge/love of soccer onto the next generation of players
• Qualify to apply for the Mentor Program College Scholarship
