With the Howard County community starting their first soccer season in 47 years without Coach Luby I thought it might put a smile on some faces to see some of the next generation of players that The Coach Luby Foundation has sponsored. David wanted to leave a legacy of continuing to inspire the youth of Howard County to play sports with soccer being our first venture. The staff at Running Brook elementary was unbelievably supportive and excited to participate in helping us find the right kids to kick things off, and we have ten 2nd graders participating in the 1st-3rd grade league through the Ellicott City Soccer Club Program. The ECSC has also been a big help in getting us organized and we hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with them. In addition to paying for the kids league fee the foundation also provided each of the kids with new soccer balls, cleats, and shin guards. None of the kids have played soccer before, but being at the games and practices it is very obvious how excited these kids are to have an opportunity to play soccer. This is what we hope is the first of many things that the foundation participates in and around Howard County, and we could not have done any of it without the generosity of so many that loved David.
On a side note I have been to several high school soccer games in Howard County already this season and it is no surprise to see former players of David’s playing all over the County with of course my two favorites being Allie and Natalie who are both playing on the varsity at River Hill. Do not know the young lady’s name, but unfortunately one of David’s former Gator players was the best player on the field and lone goal scorer in Glenelg’s 1-0 victory over the girls River Hill squad last night. Glenelg is the defending County champs and River Hill held in with them for 90 minutes so nothing to be ashamed of there.
We’ll continue to post updates on the progress of our programs and any upcoming events, and even though we all love the USA root a little for the Euros this weekend in the Ryder Cup as Captain Padraig Harrington was one of David’s favorite players.
Thank You!!!
Mike Lubitz
